August Hosse, a goldsmith from Halle, is mainly known for his chased silverwork (cf. the tankard in Schloss Moritzburg). The present ensemble is an example of the mature style of the master goldsmith, who was at the forefront of his craft. He was able to transcend the Baroque language of forms and his ewer and basin already showed Regency forms at a very early date.
